We look for each product’s maker in recall notices, court records, labels and other public sources, then grade how strong that evidence is. When no reliable source names a maker, the product is marked unknown. When a supplier changes, we log the date.

How the grades work
Four statuses, one color each
A product’s status is set by the strongest source we can stand behind. Sources are graded in tiers, from tier 1 (court and regulatory records) down to tier 6 (community rumor); the methodology lists them. Each status keeps its color wherever the product appears.

A tier 1–4 source directly names the maker of this exact product: a court or recall record, a plant code, a co-brand printed on the label, or an executive’s statement. We state the maker plainly and cite the source.
Probable46
Strong but indirect evidence points to a maker, such as a registration list, shipping records, or a telltale detail on a safety data sheet. We say the evidence points to that company, and don’t state it as fact.
Rumored3
Only community reporting or side-by-side comparisons name a candidate. We show the name, badged unverified, and never give it as the answer in a heading or fact sentence.

Why we publish “unknown”
Many sites answer “who makes it?” with a confident name, because confident names rank well in search. A lot of those names are guesses, out of date, or copied from other sites. Costco does not disclose its suppliers, and for many products there is no reliable public evidence.
When that’s the case, we say so and show the search: the recall databases, court dockets, SEC filings, customs data and Costco pages we checked, and what each one returned. A documented unknown is more useful than an invented answer.
