The common claim vs. the evidence

What’s commonly claimed, and what the evidence supports

When Costco launched Kirkland Signature Sparkling Energy Drinks (200 mg caffeine, sugar-free, orange/tropical/peach), shoppers widely speculated they were repackaged Celsius or were made by Monster. The evidence does not support that: Costco's own product catalog lists the manufacturer-of-record as MPL Brands (its manufacturer field reads 'MPL BRANDS NV INC'), a California beverage company, not Celsius or Monster. Trade coverage frames the Kirkland line as a private-label competitor that rattled Celsius, not a Celsius product. Because the catalog field can name a supplier-of-record rather than the physical co-packing plant, the attribution is graded probable.

Evidence & sources

Each source is graded on the six-tier evidence rubric, where tier 1 is strongest. Sources are archived, so a citation still works if the original page moves or goes behind a paywall.

Tier 4 Costco Kirkland Signature Sparkling Energy Drink, Variety Pack, 12 fl oz, 24-count Published · accessed July 5, 2026

Costco's product-detail page (item 1925833 / partNumber 4000444178) embeds catalog JSON whose manufacturer field reads: "mfName":"MPL BRANDS NV INC". This is the same catalog field that correctly resolves Kirkland diapers (FIRST QUALITY CONSUMER PR) and batteries (DURACELL DISTRIBUTING INC). Because Costco's manufacturer field can name a supplier-of-record or brand-company intermediary rather than the physical co-packer, it grades probable, not confirmed. Tier 4 The Motley Fool Celsius Stumbles as Costco Flexes Its Branding Power With a New Energy Drink Published April 7, 2026 · accessed July 5, 2026

"Through its private-label brand, Kirkland Signature, Costco launched a new line of energy drinks. Both companies now offer drinks using the same-size cans and the same amount of caffeine... Celsius shareholders are worried about the increased competition from this popular private label brand." Financial coverage frames the Kirkland line as a private-label competitor pressuring Celsius (notably not as a Celsius product), which supports debunking the 'it's just repackaged Celsius' theory. Does not itself name the co-packer.

Frequently asked

Who makes Kirkland Signature energy drinks?

Evidence points to MPL Brands, a Sausalito, California beverage company: Costco's own product catalog lists it as the manufacturer-of-record for the Kirkland Signature Sparkling Energy Drink (Costco's manufacturer field reads 'MPL BRANDS NV INC'). Costco's catalog field sometimes names a supplier-of-record rather than the physical co-packer, so we grade this probable rather than confirmed. Costco does not otherwise disclose the maker.

Is the Kirkland energy drink just Celsius?

The two are close comparisons (the same 12 oz can size, the same 200 mg of caffeine, and the same popular orange, tropical, and peach flavors), which is why shoppers called the Kirkland drink a Celsius dupe. But no evidence indicates Celsius makes it: Costco's catalog names MPL Brands as the manufacturer-of-record, and financial coverage treats the Kirkland line as a competitor that pressured Celsius, not a rebadged Celsius.

Does Monster make Kirkland energy drinks?

No evidence supports that. The claim that Monster is behind the Kirkland Signature energy drink is a common assumption with nothing behind it: Costco's product catalog lists MPL Brands as the manufacturer-of-record, not Monster Beverage.
