The common claim
What’s commonly claimed, and what the evidence supports
The name that circulates for this product is Vanguard Soap of Memphis, and here the evidence points the same way: a 2020 Daily Memphian profile has the company stating it "produces Costco's signature Kirkland soaps." The attribution is confirmed on that direct first-party statement, with two caveats kept on the record: the wording is generic — "Kirkland soaps," not this specific shea-butter bar — and the naming dates to 2020, with nothing newer on the public record. Vanguard is a genuine private-label soap manufacturer that has made bar soaps in Memphis since 1943. The naming's age is the standing caveat — it is flagged for re-verification, and any change will land in the change log.
Evidence & sources
Each source is graded on the six-tier evidence rubric, where tier 1 is strongest. Sources are archived, so a citation still works if the original page moves or goes behind a paywall.
Tier 4
Profile of Vanguard Soap, the Memphis private-label soap maker, names the Costco link directly: "Besides those names, which it doesn't reveal, it produces Costco's signature Kirkland soaps and millions of units of liquid soaps, also for private labels." Graded probable rather than confirmed on two grounds: the statement is generic ("Kirkland soaps" — Kirkland Signature sells a bar soap, a liquid hand soap, a body wash and a foaming hand soap, and the article does not single out this shea-butter bath bar), and it dates to 2020, predating any recent verification that the arrangement still holds. Vanguard is a bar-soap specialist by heritage, which makes the bath bar the most natural referent. Quote content-verified in the 2025-07-12 Wayback snapshot (Kirkland/Costco mentions present in the article body).
Tier 6
Corroboration that Vanguard is a genuine large private-label bar-soap manufacturer rather than a brand: its own site describes "custom soap manufacturing solutions. Offering private label and contract production of bar soaps, liquid soaps" and "crafting high-quality soaps since 1943" from a single vertically integrated Memphis, Tennessee plant (ISO 9001, RSPO, FDA, organic, non-GMO accreditations). The current homepage does not name Costco or Kirkland (client references are initials only), so this is general corroboration for the reading of Costco's manufacturer field, not a brand-to-manufacturer link.
