The common claim vs. the evidence
The common claim
What’s commonly claimed, and what the evidence supports
The prevailing answer online — Warren Distribution — holds up, with one update most pages miss: Warren Distribution became part of Highline Warren, and it is Highline Warren LLC that the API engine-oil licensee directory names on every current Kirkland Signature consumer motor oil license (re-verified August 31, 2026), matching PQIA's 2020 assessment that listed the 5W-30 as manufactured by Warren Distribution. The claim that Kirkland oil is secretly rebottled Mobil 1 has no support in any of these records.
The sources
Evidence & sources
Each source is graded on the six-tier evidence rubric, where tier 1 is strongest. Sources are archived, so a citation still works if the original page moves or goes behind a paywall.
Tier 3
Live licensee directory re-queried 2026-08-31 (this URL returns the directory's raw JSON): 19 of 20 'Kirkland'-brand licensed engine oils — including 'Kirkland Signature Full Synthetic' in 0W-20/5W-20/5W-30, the 'Kirkland Signature Full Synthetic High Mileage' grades added since the July query, and the dexos 1 Gen 2/Gen 3 variants — name 'HIGHLINE WARREN LLC' as the licensee. The one exception remains 'Kirkland Signature HDMO' 15W-40 heavy-duty diesel, licensed to Chevron Energy Technology Company. The licensee is the marketer of record for the branded oil, corroborated as the maker by the PQIA and trade-press sources below. (Directory read 2026-07-05 showed 18 of 19 on the same split; the delta is two new High Mileage licenses, not a change of licensee.)
Tier 4
PQIA's product assessment names the maker outright for this exact product: "Product: Kirkland Signature Full Synthetic Motor Oil / Viscosity Grade: SAE 5W-30 / ... Distributed by: Costco Wholesale Corp., Seattle, WA / Manufactured By: Warren Distribution" (sample purchased 2020-01-24). PQIA's testing found the oil meets its labeled SAE grade and API service categories.
Tier 4
"Highline Warren (formerly Warren Distribution) is the official supplier of Kirkland Signature motor oils." 2026 recency corroboration that the Warren relationship continues under the post-merger Highline Warren name; the same company also blends other retailers' private-label oils.

Frequently asked
Who makes Kirkland Signature motor oil?
Kirkland Signature motor oil is manufactured by Highline Warren (formerly Warren Distribution), per the API engine-oil licensee directory — which lists Highline Warren LLC as licensee on 19 of the 20 current Kirkland-brand oil licenses as of August 31, 2026, the exception being the Chevron-licensed HDMO 15W-40 diesel — and per PQIA's product assessment, which recorded the 5W-30 as 'Manufactured By: Warren Distribution.' Highline Warren is one of North America's largest private-label lubricant blenders.
Is Kirkland motor oil API certified?
Yes. The API EOLCS directory lists licensed Kirkland Signature Full Synthetic oils in 0W-20, 5W-20 and 5W-30 at API SP and SQ with ILSAC GF-6A/GF-7A, plus High Mileage and dexos-branded variants, as of August 31, 2026. PQIA's independent testing of the 5W-30 likewise found it consistent with its labeled SAE grade and API service categories.
Is Kirkland motor oil just rebranded Mobil 1?
No evidence supports that. The API licensee directory ties the Kirkland Signature consumer oils to Highline Warren, not ExxonMobil, and PQIA's assessment named Warren Distribution as the manufacturer. Highline Warren blends store-brand oils for several major retailers, which is consistent with Kirkland oil being a Warren-blended private label rather than a relabeled name brand.
Who makes Kirkland 15W-40 diesel oil?
The API directory carries two Kirkland heavy-duty diesel listings as of August 31, 2026: 'Kirkland Signature HDMO' 15W-40 licensed to Chevron Energy Technology Company, and 'Kirkland Heavy Duty Diesel' 15W-40 licensed to Highline Warren LLC. Which license matches the jug on the floor depends on the exact product name on the label, so check the label wording against the directory.
Did Kirkland motor oil change manufacturer?
No change is documented — only a name change. PQIA identified Warren Distribution as the manufacturer in 2020; Warren Distribution later combined with Highline Aftermarket to form Highline Warren; and both the live API licensee directory and 2026 trade coverage show the same operation holding the Kirkland licenses today.
